These are bigger paintings, > 30 inches in any direction.
I've really been getting back to larger works in the past couple of years, working quickly in thin layers to start. It still takes a surprising amount of time to stop making little changes. I take more time to look at them now without rushing to finish. I think that patience is making better pieces.

Some paintings you just enjoy making from start to finish, and this was one of those for me. I pulled this old photo of my daughter (and her cousins) drinking hot cocoa on a camping trip. While making this piece, I thought of all those special places we visited and the wonder they instilled in our children. The birds are rising in the distance from some far off event – to me this is about the disruptive events in our lives – they keep us moving forward. We cannot stay forever in one moment, even an imagined place.

This painting won first prize in the 2024 International "Departures" Show at the Cape Cod Museum of Arts. It is still on display on the lower floor right next to the elevator.
I started with a compositional goal of breaking up the canvas into different segments, then working different patterns in each section – almost like a quilt. That kept me thinking of my mother, a life-long quilter/artist. I had in fact, a figure of an older woman in the foreground for a long time, then one day it just came to me that an owl would be a more symbolic and interesting way of putting her spirit in the piece. She has lead a positive and amazing life, and the cast shadow from the figure is my dread of that life coming to an end.

My brother walking on the Brewster flats with his Dachshunds (my dog Lolita is in the foreground). The sky was nothing like this on the day of our walk, but I think this captures the beauty of that day and that place.

These paintings sometimes come from a specific place, or just a collection of memories of different places. The painting can of course only suggest a new place, the result of the process of one person creating a painting.
